I recently sent out the following email to several people. What do you think? Email me if you have a comment:

As you may know, France - amongst other nations - has been opposing the
U.S. government position on Iraq. This, in and of itself, is not
disturbing. Nation-states have a right to espouse what they believe to
be in their best interests and in the best interests of their region and
the world.

What is disturbing is French President Jacque Chirac's remarks concerning
those Eastern European governments who have decided, as is their right,
to support the U.S. position. Please see the URL below. Succinctly,
Chirac calls their decision to support the U.S. government's position
"infantile" and "dangerous." Further, he goes on to say, "These
countries have been not very well behaved and rather reckless of the
danger of aligning themselves too rapidly with the American position."

President Chirac criticizes his European neighbors for exercising the
same right of opinion as France does. It seems, as well, that the
gravamen of his opinion is not on the merits of his neighbors' position -
it is simply that they are too supportive of the United States government
and they are too politically (in the international sense) underdeveloped
to have this opinion.

This smells of AmeriPhobia.

Further, France - supposedly an ally of the United States - has had a
decades long history of opposing U.S. policy - no matter which U.S.
domestic political party has occupied the Presidency. Although not the
only example, who can ever forget our aircraft having to fly around
France on their way from Great Britain to bomb Libya in retaliation for
the latter's terrorist activities?

This message is not about whether or not you support a war on Iraq. It
is not about whether or not you support the position of the U.S.
government. It is simply about a putative ally behaving more as an
adversary than an ally.

I am suggesting a boycott of all French imports and all travel to France
until such time as they, as a nation, live up to their pledge of
friendship with the United States.
