Continuing life in Ypsilanti / Ann Arbor

The workload at school has picked up considerably. It is starting to become a struggle to keep up.

A new course starts for us on Monday, "Moral Foundations of the Law." It is being taught by Robert Bork. Bork is the former Solicitor General of the U.S. and was, briefly, Acting Attorney General. He carried out the Saturday Night Massacre during Watergate, firing independent counsel Archibald Cox at the direction of President Richard Nixon. Later, Bork served as a U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judge and is fairly well known for the rejection of his Supreme Court nomination by the U.S. Senate. He is one of the preeminent conservative thinkers of today - I wonder how I will get through the course.

Anyway, the course lasts two weeks this semester (1.5 hours per day) and two weeks next semester. It serves the purpose of thoroughly screwing up the routine most of us have developed.

My intramural softball team won its first game last week. I injured my calf muscle running between 1st and 2nd base. It seems to have healed well and I will play again tomorrow, taking advantage of our liberal substitution rule so I will not have to run the bases. As well, we have the first Ave Maria Golf Outing tomorrow which I will participate in.

The school has an interesting problem: it doesn't have enough parking spaces for all of its students, staff and faculty. The city of Ann Arbor is being particularly uncooperative - recently designating some on-street parking as a no-parking zone at the request of our neighbors because they didn't like cars parked on the street. Although the administration is working hard to solve the problem it has brought some tensions to the surface: the students feel that they are the paying customers and, therefore, entitled to the school's spots before the staff. The administration, obviously, feels differently.

I scored two Notre Dame - Pittsburgh tickets in South Bend for next Saturday. Although not an "Irish" fan, I have always wanted to experience a game at Notre Dame Stadium.

I also have tickets to see Michigan play Notre Dame in ice hockey at Michigan. Michigan consistently puts out a national champion contending team so this should be a delight.

I recently lost an election for student senate. No vote counts were published so I don't know how badly. We had 15 candidates running for 3 positions. I am hoping it will be a blessing in disguise.
